What makes a successful entrepreneur?

“What makes a successful entrepreneur?” I was asked, and “how does Camp BizSmart encourage and develop an entrepreneurial mindset, in the young people who participate in our business and entrepreneurship academy?” The Wall Street Journal report, The Entrepreneur’s DNA, highlights excerpts of Hal Gregersen’s (Professor of innovation and leadership, Insead graduate business school) discussion on this topic at the Unleashing Innovation conference. I am going to pull out a couple of statements from the article and use them to make a point but I encourage you to read the entire report. What researchers say: One-third of our creative capacity is DNA – the other two-thirds is the world we grow […]

Camp BizSmart and Silicon Valley – a match made in heaven

“There is a reason why all of these innovators go to the San Jose metro area or to San Francisco” says UC Berkeley economics professor Enrico Moretti, “and that’s because they are already innovating there.” This is just an excerpt from a recent article written by Mike Cassidy of the San Jose Mercury News, I encourage you to read the entire article. Bill Reichert, Garage Technology Ventures, at Camp BizSmart The year Camp BizSmart launched, 2008, Mike Cassidy wrote a story about our business and entrepreneur camp. He was delighted to find that young people 11-15, especially in Silicon Valley, would jump at the chance to spend 10 days of […]

Teens help teens in local community

Update 12/12/2011: Treasures 4 Teens distributed holiday cheer to over 400 teens at last Saturday’s distribution day! Awesome! Toy drives are a common sight this time of year, but did you know that the proceeds are actually distributed to children and teens up to age 18? Because most associate “toys” with younger children, there is often a shortage of teen-appropriate gifts. Camp BizSmart grad (2011) Michael Daboll recognized this problem, and Treasures 4 Teens was born. Michael Daboll, pictured above, recounts how Camp BizSmart helped him develop the skills to take his ideas to the next level. “I started Treasures 4 Teens before I went to Camp BizSmart, and while […]

We’ve been receiving updates on all fronts: school, sports, community service, music and arts, and of course, personal business ventures, since our 2011 camps have ended. When asking students what they did this summer, you may expect to hear, “went to the beach”, “took a vacation”, “read some good books”, or “took a class”. But imagine asking that question of students on the beautiful island of Oahu and having a student who is 11-15 answer you this way, ”I worked with a team of students to create a way to make drinking water out of salt water, and came up with a way to carry it on my back.” or “I served on a team that evaluated and improved a cool new activity device that will help kids my age be more fit and healthy!” Am […]
