The final Camp BizSmart Silicon Valley Summer 2015 session took place on July 27-Aug 7, at Stanford University. The first place winner, for this session was ComfortLux Crescent, a Xicato sponsored team, was announced at the Showcase on Aug 7, 2015. The students who made up this team are: Jasper Wong, CEO; Brandon Nguyen, CIO; Ishir Gupta, CTO, Viveka Saraiya, CVOC, Max Rothman, CMO and CSO and Steven Zhou, CFO.
These students decided to solve the business case that was given to them from Menko Deroos, CEO of Xicato. Mr. Deroos challenged them to create the hospital light of the future that would not only provide more pleasing light in patient rooms, but would have the ability to heal patients faster, aid medical staff and promote cost savings for the patient and the hospital.
The ComfortLux Crescent team created a product which has a unique light that can help patients heal faster by reducing fatigue and pain. Combined with newer solutions, like these oils that were rated among the best for pain reduction, and you can reduce pain in a way that before wasn’t possible. Their design has many features. Its crescent shape gives the fixture a natural arc so that throughout the day, light travels in the path of the sun. The lights have a day-night cycle which allows the light to change according to the time of day. There are also two speakers on the ends of the Crescent. This allows the medical staff to talk to the patient if they are not in the room. They can also play light music if the patient wishes to use it in this way. In addition, right next to the microphone there is a small camera which allows the staff to check on the patient when not in the room.
We are always fortunate to have fantastic judges with great experience with start-ups and businesses of all sizes. Bill Joos who has worked for Apple and Garage Technology Ventures before creating his own consulting business to startups, Brian Gorbett who created his first business while still in college and sold it to a large hospital, then was recruited by Microsoft Start-ups, has worked with Google Ventures and now screening US startups for Microsoft Ventures; Anil Telekapalli, a technology entrepreneur who is the Executive Director and GM with Maxim Integrated.
At each Camp BizSmart session an entrepreneur of the year is selected. The entrepreneur of the year for this session was Charlie Goldstein. It was unanimous among the staff that Charlie had an abundance of zest, optimism and grit and displayed the Camp BizSmart values of character, courage and citizenship throughout the two week session. While so many students develop and display these attributes, it is a pleasure to honor a student who truly exemplifies these qualities and is a great role model to others. Charlie received a special gift that honors Ben Franklin, an American who was a great statesman, inventor and entrepreneur.
This session date is a very popular one as students have the choice to stay residential at Stanford University while attending Camp BizSmart. While we have students who attend Camp BizSmart from all over the world at all of our sessions, this group was very diverse had a lot of fun together as well. What a great group of young aspiring entrepreneurs! It was a great celebration with family and friends at the Camp BizSmart Showcase and Awards ceremony on Aug 7, 2015 at Microsoft. Pictured below are the Camp BizSmart Alums from this session.
Stay tuned for which of the first place teams from our four Camp BizSmart competitions will be named the top team for the Camp BizSmart Summer 2015 competitions.
