The third Camp BizSmart competition was held on August 7, 2014 at Microsoft in Silicon Valley. Thanks to Dan’l Lewin, VP at Microsoft for sponsoring Camp BizSmart since we were founded in 2008. Dan’l, hats off to you for believing in the power of inspiring Camp BizSmart young people to be business savy and to develop the entrepreneurial skills that will serve them well all of their life. Dr. Mike Gibbs, CEO and Cofounder of Camp BizSmart is pictured in the “o” of the Microsoft sign below as his way of saying the o represents the people at Microsoft that not only make it great but who use their influence to do good and to inspire the next generation.
We are pleased to announce that first place was awarded to the Revolights sponsored team, illumi-tube was determined by judges, Marty Reed, John Bulter and Paul Witkay. Congratulations to the illumi-tube student team members, Megan Aguilar, CEO; Lauren Lin, CTO; Aishu Gandhi, CFO; Derek Leung, CIO; Carson Collins, CSO; and Joey Darwood, CMO/CVOC.
The judges and company founders provided the following comments about team illumi-tube’s product design and business strategy:
- The judges & founders liked that the team didn’t need to fear monger to set the scene. Main stat = concern for safety, which seems the most pertinent.
- Modular product design, provides the opportunity to be sold in pieces to address pricing.
- Really strong competitor analysis
- Compatible across all strollers, and other vehicles
- Integrates w/ an app, which may add value to customer
- Bright forward projection for lighting the way
In addition to the first place team, the judges wanted to acknowledge an innovative technology solution that might have other applications. The judges felt that the Vintage Electric Vin8Charger team had stumbled on a potential technology solution that if further developed and applied in a new way might have benefit. Keeping with the bright idea that just wasn’t ready yet but had future potential, the team was called up on stage to be recognized by Camp Director Elian Savodivker.
Finally, the individual award for the student who best demonstrates the Camp BizSmart values of Character, Courage and Citizenship as well as the Camp BizSmart created word “ZOG” which stands for Zest, Optimism and Grit receives the Benjamin Franklin Award. This award is named for one of America’s founding fathers because of his many skills and attributes as an inventor and businessman, statesman and much more. The student who earned the Ben Franklin Award recognition was, Megan Aguilar.
