After a successful inaugural year with 24 young students from five states and two countries, Camp BizSmart is returning to Chattanooga, Tennessee this year. “It was super exciting, and we saw tremendous growth in all the kids,” Marla Zemanek, Camp Director says of the 2017 event.
Like last year, the program will be held at The Baylor School June 17-29, and participants will stay in beautiful Baylor dormitories. https://www.baylorschool.org/
The Baylor School campus presents a unique setting for camp. Nestled along the Tennessee River with stunning views, vast green carpets of grass and canopies of trees, campers are able to enjoy a tremendous number of activities at the end of the day and on the weekend. In addition to swimming in an Olympic-size pool, playing basketball in a state-of-the-art gym and hanging out in a cool Student Center, last year’s group went on night hikes, a riverboat excursion and a tour of the renowned Tennessee Aquarium. Even more exciting activities are being planned for this year, including a trip to the famous Rock City.
A distinct advantage of being in Chattanooga is access to successful entrepreneurs and investors in the community who will act as judges for our pitch competition. And, as a way to practice the skills of gap analysis, critical thinking and brainstorming, students will take on a business challenge from the local attraction, Rock City http://www.seerockcity.com. A night hike is scheduled there so the campers can view the actual location while hiking along a trail where they can see 7 states from one vantage point.
Another extraordinary resource the school provides is coaching by Dr. Mary Loveless, science teacher and Director of Baylor’s IdeaLab. Under her tutelage, a team of students were winners of a prestigious NASA competition in 2017. Baylor also finished the 2015-16 school year as the sixth best overall high school athletic program in the nation, so campers who are ranked may arrange private coaching sessions at the end of the camp day with coaches should they need to continue training.
For kids who live in dense urban areas, the Baylor setting provides an escape to nature and exploration that kids naturally love to do. For some, experiencing real quiet at night and seeing the brilliant galaxies of stars is a first. This campus is also a wonderful place to experience the genuine hospitality of the South, and a staff that clearly loves kids. Parents will be happy to know that the highly secure, closed campus hidden away in the hills ensures the safety of kids.
“This year we expect to have more local entrepreneurs and business people involved as judges, speakers, and presenters of mini-case studies,” Zemanek said. “We are also focusing more on developing lifelong leadership skills and will emphasize communication skills, including giving feedback and working through conflict.”
Here’s what kids and parents had to say about the program:
